16-ounce can purchased at ABV Public House in Hillsboro, OR sometime back in late 2022 when this beer was new. Date stamp reads "08/26/22". Poured in stages into a Fort George Festival of Dark Arts 2015 taster glass.
Look:
Dark red-brown body with ruby highlights. The beer manages a thin skin of cream-colored foam that retreats to the edges of the glass quickly and leaves no lacing. Impressive legs, though, as befits a beer with an ABV north of 16%. There's a bit of sludge in the last pour.
Smell:
Caramel, sweet malt, and glimpses of raisins and brine, all adrift in a sea of bourbon. Yet somehow not unbalanced. Fleeting traces of burnt sugar and savory smoke.
Taste:
A formidable amount of bourbon flavor and heat, with a depth of mouthwatering malt best measured in fathoms (and lots of 'em). Nuances of malt follow: bread crust, caramel, nutty granola. Notes of maraschino cherry, caramel, smoke, almond paste, and molasses cookies. Luscious sweetness tinged with a faint saltiness. An unexpected floral/licorice bitterness manages to make a comment in the liqueur-like finish before being overwhelmed by sweet, nutty malt and a roar of bourbon. Over the top, yet, again, somehow not unbalanced.
Feel:
More body than an army of Beyoncés. Mean to say this beer is THICC and smooth. Radiant with alcohol heat. Mild but effective carbonation.
Overall:
After more than 3 years of aging, this beer wakes and declares, " 'Twas only a wee nap." It rises, bold and pugnacious, full of bourbon and heat. Notes of fruit, smoke, and herbs provide interesting side quests. A rich and thoroughly satisfying beer, and I am just a bit sad that I will not meet this one again.
