I picked this up in Texas when I went to Oklahoma. I have become a fan of the beer they create. Crispy Ship is a favorite of mine.
I am looking forward to this porter. Using a tulip glass, I served this at around 48 degrees. The pour created a frothy, creamy, light tan two-fingered head—the somewhat quick dissipation left little lacing on the glass. Looking at the color of the beer, it seems like it is around SRM 32 dark brown, nearly black, with dark mahogany hues. Overall the appearance is about average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I smell dark roasted malts, caramel, marshmallows, bread, dark chocolate, coffee, raisins, vanilla, and burnt sugar.
I taste dark roasted malts, caramel, bread, marshmallows, char, dark chocolate, coffee, figs, burnt sugar, vanilla, a touch of Maillard, and earthiness.
The mouthfeel is slightly bitter and finishes dry with some astringency.
Overall, I was surprised by this beer; it is not sweet. I expected this to be like a dessert porter, but it had great flavors without the sugar. The beer was a surprise, and I enjoyed it.
