It's almost black coffee brown, sitting inside a clear pint glass. Drawn from a tap, there's very little light tan head, as that's the way we pour draft beers in the Philadelphia area. For an IPA, it's not very aromatic, just a little malt and some tropical fruit references. For a nearly black brew, the roasted aspect of the malts is relatively subdued to taste. Instead, there's more of the tropical fruit references suggested by the nose. There's a little earthiness, so it's not too sweet, but neither is it particularly flavorful. That doesn't make it bad, as the mouthfeel is supple and smooth, delivering the 8% ABV very surreptitiously. There's acceptable glass lacing to complete a good visual. Although this can't be considered a standout, it is a very pleasant way to imbibe an Imperial IPA.
