They describe this as a Red Ale, and it is in fact a beautiful shade of red-amber with a big pile of off-white foam in the Ommegang chalice. Lush and mellow mouthfeel. Nose of toasty grain and a hint of resins. Some malty sweetness that is just enough to make the slight bitter ending welcome. Roasted flavors with a clean beery aftertaste. Not overly hopped.
Overall this is pleasantly malty, well balanced, and totally quaffable. Not usually a style I care much for but this is among the best Red Ales I can remember having. From the 32 oz can filled at the Costa Mesa brewery tap.
