Prickly Pear Lime Mexican Style Lager brewed in collaboration with the Beer Baroness Society!

This Mexican lager is brewed with malted barley and corn for a light base with just a touch of sweetness, and the Mexican lager yeast produces a clean aftertaste. We've added prickly pear and lime flavour which complements the beer with tasting notes of pithy citrus juice and zest from the lime and melon, kiwi and a hint of bubblegum from the prickly pear.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. My first beer from the North Bay, Ontario brewery...

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated May 5 2025 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a crystal clear pale yellow colour, topped with an inch of tight, foamy white head that collapses within a couple of minutes; a thin collar is the only survivor, with no cap and practically no lace. Prickly pear is the most noticeable component of the aroma, suggestive of elderberry, raspberry and pear; there's also an undercurrent of citrusy lime juice, as well as a faint cereal grain note.

It tastes alright, but the contrasting flavours don't synergize well. On one side, you've got the prickly pear, which contributes hints of berries and orchard fruit. Then there's the lime, which adds some citrus zest character to the mix (particularly near the end of the sip), alongside the underlying lager, which tastes of white tortilla, gritty cereal & grainy malts. Fruity, earthy, corn grit aftertaste that doesn't linger for too long. Light in body, with restrained carbonation for the style; it provides a little bit of crispness, but the mouthfeel is smooth and a little slick. Fair drinkability, but I couldn't drink this one after another.

Final Grade: 3.48, a B-. I don't really care for prickly pear, so the following opinion is not at all objective/unbiased - but I don't think prickly pear plays all that well in the context of a pale lager. That's not to say Cerveza Baronesa is a *bad* beer - it's more or less serviceable if you're just looking for something light, refreshing and vaguely fruity to quench your summer thirst. Yet the flavours clash constantly, making for an incoherent jumble that comes off as if two separate beverages were haphazardly sloshed together. Unique enough to be worth a try, but not a brew I plan to return to anytime soon.

Poured a small foam head. Light beer color. Smells fruity...I guess that's prickly pear?

Just tasted it, and very unique. Not like any Mexican beer I've ever had. Taste is very herbal. I guess there's a hint of lime as well, but the prickly pear herbal taste hits you right away. I guess that's the point of this beer. Slightly tastes like those lime flavored tortilla chips on the after taste in a way.

Not my cup of tea. Huh....herbal tea and beer. That's a good description of this drink.
I've had a couple pretty good Cerveza beers by now and I wouldn't take this over those, but nice to try something new.

I wouldn't get it again personally but I'm sure there some people out there that might like this.

I almost feel like I would like these tastes separately ( just a prickly pear drink and of course plain old beer by itself) but not really together.
