Appearance: A generous pour overflowed the glass as well over 4 fingers of head were initially produced. The body was initially clear boasting a proverbial whirlwind of carbonation until the bottom of the beer changed it to an opaque yellow where you can't make out the carbonation. That said it does lace like crazy and stick around, so I'll give it props for that. It just seems excessive.
Smell: Dry citrus hops in abundance which is the norm for the style, curbed slightly by some doughy malt. Orange is the dominant note, but lemon and grapefruit are there in the background. Good potency and didn't require warming. That said, it's very one note.
Taste: As the smell, starts with doughy malt with a hint of candied orange that turns to dry citrus hops which have a constrained bitterness. It's really plain, but at least it does seem to have some beer aspects shinning through and it seems to be done well. I'll say this, there isn't even a hint of the 6.8% ABV here.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation is nice and frothy, but excessively so as it comes across as incredibly aerated and mild. The transitioning in good, albeit it doesn't have long to go. Hop bitterness is kept in check, and the aftertaste is mild mixed citrus but mild to the point of almost not being there.
Drinkability: I mean it goes down easy enough, but this guy is gassy. I want to say medium bodied, but the incredibly high carbonation seems to lighten it up. It does that thing where the dry aspects encourages you to drink more.
Final Thoughts: I haven't had a lot of New England IPAs, but I found this to be incredibly similar to another one I had called #Sabro. It also wasn't that different from the other one I had. This one comes across as spiked dry-hopped Orangina, which is something I don't mind. However my impression here is this is the general expectation and also limit of the style, which isn't a good impression. I hope I'm proved wrong in the future.
