Tropical Milkshake IPA is the first milkshake IPA we ever released, and still one of our all-time favorites. For its long anticipated re-release, we scaled things up a notch and brewed this hazy IPA to imperial strength.
.
This mango colored brew drinks like a hoppy, tropical fruit smoothie. It is loaded with protein rich wheat and oats along with a touch of milk sugar to give it a super soft, pillowy mouthfeel.
.
All hops were added post-boil and in the fermenter to lend their juicy, tropical fruit aromas and flavors as opposed to hop bitterness.
.
After a double dose of dry hopping we conditioned the finished beer on guava, mango, papaya, and Madagascar vanilla. The fruits were specifically chosen to complement the intense aromatics of one of our favorite hop blends, and the vanilla enhances the mouthfeel to give this brew a creamier, milkshake-like character.
.
We get notes of mango smoothie, guava tiki drink, fresh, juicy papaya chunks, creamy Madagascar vanilla, hand squeezed orange OJ, ripe peach, fluffy oats, and apricots.

This was another beer from Source that I picked up recently at Jim Dandy's in Nutley, as that was the only place around here that carried this. The version released this time around was 7.8% ABV and supposedly more an Imperial IPA than a New England IPA. I would never have guessed that this was so strong, since the fruit and sweetness were enough to hide and overcome any other traits present. Indeed, all that was missing from this was a straw or an umbrella to garnish the liquid in my pint glass!

No doubt that this was straight-up mango when poured out as it was a solid, deep orange with a nice, full head topping it off. Some of the bubble were huge and that was a sign that the lacing left behind was minimal as there was only a ring around the center of my glass that stuck around. Tons of mango, papaya, milk sugar, and oats in the nose as the tangerine and vanilla sweetness fully emerged in the taste. Balanced, tasty, and lightly carbonated, this indeed felt like a milkshake as it took me back to the Tired Hands beers of yesteryear that I loved. Cloying on my mouth and sticky on my lips, the aftertaste that was left behind was just as enjoyable as the liquid itself as that stuck around long, long after I (quickly) finished this off.

The ripe peach and dank hops took a while to emerge as they did only once the beer fully warmed up, as they added a wonderful depth to this. Dated 11/9 with "TROPIC LIKE IT'S HOT" written below it, this was an awesome beer that proves that Milkshake IPA's should be in a category by itself on here. If you miss summer like I do, this would nearly be enough to take you back and put a smile on your face at the same time. It's that good and it's another reason why I'm falling in love with Source more and more by the release!
