Cornucopia is a fall seasonal sweet tart ale conditioned on local NJ cranberries, Mandarin orange, pomegranate, and a touch of Madagascar vanilla. It was brewed with pilsner and wheat malts, hopped lightly in the kettle, and fermented dry with a special lactic acid producing yeast strain from Berkley Yeast.

Picked this up yesterday at Source as I've been on a big fall beer kick lately, without having the same Marzens and Octoberfests that flood store shelves this time of the year. The other brews for the season have been wonderful and this was too, as it was refreshing, tart, and light enough to nearly completely hide the alcohol - as has been the case with nearly everything else that I've had from Source recently!
Cornucopia translates into "horn of plenty" as this had plenty going for it from the get-go. Cloudy and golden apple in hue, this was beautifully radiant with a small, even head that topped it off. That softly settled as the foam never quite went away as the lacing left behind was soapy and spotty without being too dense. Lots of vanilla sweetness, lactic acid, tart cranberry, and blueberry juice in the nose as the taste was sour, tangy, slick, and had hints of pomegranate, hard candy, and orange zest that gave this plenty of bite, zing, and soda-like liveliness. Much of that had to do with the sharp carbonation but this was a beer that was perfect for the season without being a true fall seasonal beer, as the wheat malt and lightness made this feel like a summer throwback that would be pertinent year-round!
A bit of warmth came through from the alcohol but with so much going on, the booze factor was about the last thing that crossed my mind when I had this. Dated 11/2 on the bottom of the can with "BOUNTIFUL HARVEST" written below it, this was easily greater than the sum of it's wildly divergent parts as I never had anything quite like this before. The locally-sourced berries made this pure Jersey as this was further proof of why I drive down to Colts Neck to get their latest releases. Toast the season with this fine offering and be glad that we're better off for having this available in our neck of the woods!
