Imperial Pastry Sweet Tart Ale

Aamras Puri was brewed to celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, that takes place annually in India. This giant, New Years festival kicks off on the darkest night of the Hindu lunar calendar and extends for 5 days!

Diwali’s root meaning is “rows of lighted lamps,” which are typically displayed outside of homes and businesses to usher in bright beginnings and to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness in the New Year.

Other traditional ways to partake in this fun celebration include decorating your front doorstep with colorful sand designs, wearing your finest silk robes, lighting fireworks, and, of course, sharing good food, drink, and camaraderie with your family, friends, and neighbors!

Aamras, literally translated to “mango juice,” is a sweet Indian dish often accompanied by puri or chapati (Indian breads).

Aamras Puri is an Imperial Pastry Sweet Tart Ale that embodies the sweet mango flavors of aamras complemented by select chaat masala spices.

It was brewed with pilsner and wheat malts, flaked oats, and milk sugar, then hopped lightly in the kettle before being fermented with a special lactic acid producing yeast strain.
.
Post fermentation we conditioned this opaque, yellow-orange brew on an abundance of mango, fresh, local Grown in Monmouth ginger root, candied ginger, yellow chili, and kala namak (Indian black salt).

We get notes of aamras puri, fresh ginger, sweet tart candies, bright Amarillo chili, sugar coated ginger chunks, green cardamom, and sweet mango juice.

Ever celebrate Diwali? I'm not Indian by descent but I was completely intrigued when I saw this beer up for release at Source so naturally, I had to get my hands on this. Sure enough, this wasn't like anything that I ever had before but when it comes to these guys, that seems to be par for the course lately as this was familiar and enjoyable while being completely new to the senses at the same time!

No surprise that something that was full of mango ended up looking like it when I poured it out of the can. Opaque and topped off with a thin head, there was *no* lacing left behind as I sipped this as the foam settled quickly like a quiet soda. Plenty of the aforementioned mango in the nose along with exotic spice, ginger, and lactic acid as the taste was just as tangy, spicy, and vivacious from start to finish and amazingly colorful on the palate. Highly carbonated and full-bodied because of the wheat and oats, the milk sugar provided the underlying sweetness that held everything together and almost made this feel like dessert with just a touch of alcohol.

Like nearly all of the other beers that I've had from Source, that was well-hidden here as I only felt a bit of warming right before finishing this off. Dated 11/2 with "SAAL MUBARAK" written underneath it, this was completely appropriate for the Indian festival of lights but for those looking for a break from IPA's or the fall beers that flood the shelves this time of year, this would be a worthy choice. If you can handle the spice, you'll easily appreciate what Source has here as this was another fun beer (and accompanying label) from them that'll have me returning for more in the near future...
