Picked this up lately as this was the first Altbier that I had in ages. I trusted Source to nail this style and sure enough, they did as this was dark, mellow, and smooth with plenty of balance and body without feeling watered down in the least. This got better as it warmed up as it was quite complex after the initial impression that I got from it!
Absolutely lovely look to this as the solid copper hue shone lovingly in the light with just a few streams of bubbles coming up through it. The offsetting head looked like bread as it was thick and slow to settle although there was hardly any lacing left behind as I worked my way through this. Leather, apple, pear, and Kolsch yeast were detected in the mild nose as they were much more prevalent in the taste. Slightly herbal, woodsy, and reminiscent of dark bread, the mouthfeel was deep and nuanced with just enough spice and funk to keep this from feeling light. Indeed, the finish was clean and slightly cloying but this was as true to form as any Altbier that I've ever reviewed on here!
Dated 11/30 with "RETRO FUTURISTIC" on the can, it fit in well with the artistic label that I've come to expect from Source. More importantly, this was an example of why more of these should be found on shelves when autumn rolls around. It was enough to win me over as I'm glad I gave it a go. Props to these guys for beautifully nailing another style!
