Pale amber in color, this session ale balances malt, hops, and yeast in such a way that is both flavorful and refreshing.
We brewed this pub ale with a base of premium English Maris Otter pale malt along with a touch of biscuit and light crystal malts. It was hopped in the kettle with English Fuggles and East Kent Goldings then fermented with a London ale yeast strain that imparts light fruity esters.

Down The Pub was packaged with nitrogen in the can to mimic the traditional drinking experience of a frothy, lower carbonated, cask conditioned ale “hand pulled” to your pint glass with a beer engine.

Picked this up recently at Peterson's Wines Unlimited in Westfield, as I thought that Source could do one of these justice. Not to my surprise, this was a delightful English Bitter that was fun, easy to drink, and low in alcohol as I never even felt that there was any of the latter in here. Nicely balanced and lively, the instructions on the can were helpful in mimicking the manner in which something of the sort should be poured!

That was in large part because of the lively foam, which topped this off wonderfully and was long-lasting throughout my session. One thick and well-defined ring remained near the center of my glass as parts of it bled down, ever so slowly. Loved the copper hue to this was it was nearly clear, subtly bright, and softly effervescent. A good amount of malt, British hops, apple, and pear were on the calm nose as the taste had come cracker, dark bread, soft bitterness, and a light toasted undertone to it. Lots going on here but nothing was overpowering and everything meshed well together as the carbonation was spot-on with a crystalline undertone tying everything in together.

This was the perfect session beer as the alcohol was never felt or detected in the taste with the end result being a brew that didn't last in my glass for very long. Nicely balanced and livelier than I anticipated, I could have easily cracked (after shaking) another open upon finishing this off. Dated 6/14 with 'GRAB A PINT" written underneath it, Source did this style well, down to the label that was every bit as artful and enjoyable as the liquid inside the can.

Pours a cloudy light brown with shades of orange, head is off white in color, nitro can gives a nice thick lingering forever head. It’s interesting these are bigger bubbles for a nitro beer, still small, but not that creamy look that other nitro beers have.

Nose is doughy and just slightly yeasty, honey like sweet note, and a little bit of toastiness with some earthy hops.

Taste is similar biscuits bread, honey, and some toasted graininess; some earthy and musty hops on the finish.

Great mouthfeel; light body, cask like carbonation, this one hits it better than other nitro cans, I’ll expand below. Again like in the nose low to moderate hoppy finish. Pretty dry on the finish.

Thought this mimicked cask better than most nitro cans. Sometimes nitro adds some extra creaminess that to me is not present in a cask pour. This was flipped in appearance as it wasn’t as pretty as most nitro pours or cask pours.

Overall a very well made bitter; highly drinkable and balanced beer.
