I have to admit that I'm not the biggest Nutella aficionado but when I saw this, it looked intriguing as I wanted to give it a go. This was released recently with a bunch of other beers at the same time as Source's 3rd Anniversary drop and as much as I wanted to fully enjoy this, this wasn't as noteworthy as I would have liked. Just a bit too much was going on here but thankfully, this was still a quality brew although it took quite a while to finish off!
Of course, this poured dark a few shades short of being completely black, with some hints of light seeping in around the brown edges. No head was seen on top of this and the same was true for any lacing that could have been left behind after every sip. Nutella sweetness, cacao nibs, bourbon, and booze were in the sweet and sticky nose as the taste was just as varied and potent. A bit of vanilla bean, raisin, caramel, and raspberry juice emerged in the taste this fully warmed up with this being deep in flavor and more than enough to potentially knock me out! This felt and tasted every bit as strong as it's listed amount of alcohol as I'm not sure of a pastry and bourbon Stout go well together.
That's not to say that this wasn't enjoyable - as it was when sipped and taken slowly. More sweet vanilla (as opposed to vanilla bean) and berry would have enhanced this but as it was, this was as much a curiosity than something reassuringly familiar as the pastry, cake-like finish and burn from the bourbon combined for an oddly interesting aftertaste. Fans of Nutella will enjoy Source's take on this but as for me, one of these as a nightcap was enough. Thankfully, I get to keep the artful label!
