This was another beer that I picked up at Source late last year, as it sounded completely intriguing and mysterious. Sure enough, it was as this was as dark and eluding a Black IPA that I've ever had, even though it was on part with the description of it on Instagram!
Dark in hue, this was *not* black as just enough mahogany around the edges let a bit of light through to ensure that this would keep me on my toes. A lovely tan head evenly and quietly settled down although the suds never fully subsided. Thick rings of lacing stayed behind as they bled down and easily covered a majority of my pint glass. Lots of barley, deep forest, and acrid citrus were in the nose as the taste was much more bright, bold, and noteworthy. Stone fruit, lime pith, pungent pine, and sharp grapefruit all came into the fray as this was lightly roasted, balanced, and smooth as silk. Full in body and nicely carbonated, the slickness left behind was reminiscent of a left coast IPA as the tingle that accompanied it easily left me wanting more.
A bit of peat moss, dry barley, and earthy bitterness stayed for the duration as everything else softly faded away. The amount of booze was spot-on as it was as potent as the liquid, without taking any of this brew's thunder away. Canned on 11/7 of last year with "ALL BLACK EVERYTHING" (ode to Other Half?) written underneath it, this was another winner from Source that was on par with more notable examples of the style. Once again, the only problem with this was that I couldn't read the label!
