I love a good Japanese Rice Lager and all of the ones that I've reviewed on here came from the other side of the country. Of course, it was lovely to see that Source finally took on this style as once again, they brewed a pleasing example of it that was smooth, flavorful, and oh-so-easy to sit back with!
Unlike the others, this had a darker hue to it as it was copper and mostly clear. A ton of frothy head topped this off as it never fully settled down, and stuck around in both on the cap, and in the form of solid clusters that nearly formed intact rings. The aroma and taste to this were not quite what I expected, as it was darker, spicier, and more full thanks to the presence of midnight wheat. That was a good thing, as this beer kept me on my toes and shone through once it warmed up, as the overriding scent was that of a lager.
Loads of bread and tea emerged on the palate as I worked my way through this, as the slickness left behind was subtle but persistent at the same time. Canned on 10/29 of last year with "NEON BUZZ" written below it, this was fun and nuanced, while staying true to stylistic form. Fans of Source like me will be pleased with this but for a change from mass-market lagers that also serve as sessions, this would be worthy of reaching out for as it was nicely crafted. Props to these guys for pushing the envelope, once again!
