Served on nitro at the brewery in a tulip glass. It pours an attractive cranberry-ruby color with a thick, long-lasting, light tan cap and lacing that you'd expect from a nitro pour. It's highly fragrant with fig, prune, allspice, ginger, and just a whiff of rum. While I'm not a rum enthusiast, the barrel-aging elevates this beyond the typical Winter Warmer. It offers abundant holiday fruit and spicing: raisin, plum, fig, ginger, allspice, and perhaps a hint of brown sugar. It's like a tasty dessert. As it warms, the rum becomes more evident. The mouthfeel is thick and creamy with low/moderate carbonation, and it hides the 8.8% ABV quite well. Overall, Gretel's Kettle is a delightful ale that offers a hint of Christmas to come - even though I drank it before Labor Day.
