Brewed in collaboration @njcraftbeer , we present our first American Barleywine, Pork Island. This is a big and malty beer with a hop bitterness to match. The nicely caramelized flavors from a 2 1/2 hour boil and fermented with Voss Kveik, balance the heat from the 10.2 % ABV to make for a complex and warming beer.

On draught at the brewery. It pours a dark iced tea color with ruby hues and a frothy, ecru-colored cap and lacing. The nose offers roasted malt, brown bread, caramel, raisin, and just a whiff of cherry. The taste has greater depth and sophistication, including roasted male with bready sweetness, raisin, fig, and black cherry. It's earthy with a strong hoppy bitterness throughout. This ale is medium-bodied, creamy, with appropriate carbonation, and there is noticeable heat from the 10.2% ABV. Overall, Pork Island is a very well crafted American Barleywine. It provides enough fruit and caramel sweetness to balance the hoppy bitterness. While I generally prefer the English Barleywine style, Pork Island is a very good alternative.
