Pours dark copper/medium brown and hazed. Limited head. Good lacing.
The coffee and coconut aromas promised on the can are there but perhaps just a touch muted. Just a bit of honey-kissed malt is present, too.
Whatever the nose lacked in coffee presence arrives on the tip of the tongue with authority, and it lingers across the palate. The coconut is faint at the outset, opens up in mid-stream, and then fades again a bit on the finish. The coffee provides a solid constant backbone for other flavors to arrive. Vanilla on the tip of the tongue. A touch of earthy/grassy hops on the finish. Cola and elusive herbal notes in mid-palate.
Despite and overall sweetness, and creamy feel, it has a touch of drying astringency from the coffee that keeps it surprisingly medium, maybe even medium light for a coffee-forward brew.
Had this been billed as just a coffee-infused blonde, it probably would have gotten one more notch on the ratings from me, because the coconut was almost a no-show in this can, and wasn't really missed for that matter. Still, Severance continues to please, and is a great SF brewer that really pushes the envelope on styles. If I want something local and memorably unique, I know where to turn.
