proper english brown ale here served on cask, delicious brew, crushable, and like their bitter, was a great beer to start the day with, i love this type of thing, especially on cask, no frills and super well executed. lighter in color than american brown ales generally are, reddish around the edges, with a frothy inch of cask foam on top, looks wicked in the glass. nose is nutty, roasty, only a little sweet, and has hints of good tobacco, toffee, and fresh ground coffee, i like the yeast being evident in this too. the flavor follows, more of the middle malt tones than the darker ones, raisin, maple, date, and a little chocolate malt too. the yeast adds a heartiness to an otherwise light beer for me, heath bread, wet soil, proofing dough, earthy minerals, really rounds this out. a collaboration with obelisk, with whom i am largely unfamiliar, but this is a real nice effort overall. smooth in this format, lighter bodied but not thin, and dry finishing for the style. good enough to make me thirsty for more from away days, will have to hit them up next time in the city! they seem to be flying a little too low under the radar for how good the beer was...
