Pale golden color, mid-sized beige head. Unclean aroma of grain, fruits, and slight sourness. Taste is the same. Light bitterness in aftertaste. Regional Ukrainian Zhiguli with light pleasant dirtiness.

From a 16.9 ounce bottle, this beer is a clear yellow color with a slim white head. The aroma has soft malts, a bit of floral hop notes, and a touch of sulphur-like lager qualities. It is squarely a European lager. Medium-full in body, slightly sweet, carbonated, and straightforward. There isn’t a lot to like or dislike about the beer. It’s about what was expected and is a good example of the style

I'm glad there is a top reviewer before me so I know what to think about Zhygulivske. Thanks NeroFiddled !
My copy (also coded 090419, which I hope is not a Best By date as I'm 20 months late) was bought at a Polish supermarket in a strip mall in Norwood Heights (a Chicago mid-Century neighborhood near O'Hare.)

I'm probably rating an aged lager here, so I will use my imagination. Looks are slightly below average, decent pale color but not enough foam or bubbles. Smells are mostly malt and I can believe there are adjuncts involved. I notice hops in the Taste, but just enough to provide balance; but not enough to provide distinction. Nicely smooth in the mouth (I'm betting wheat is involved); but clearly needs more bubbles.

I had this for lunch with leftover Indian food. And instead of culture clash, I got a calming effect from the lager. So, I'm happy.

For my micro-review, I went on their website and expected them to be owned by Heineken or InBev... but no sign of that. Instead they remind me of a Bavarian beverage company that offers lemonade and flavored waters: indeed they claim to use German technology for Ukrainian ingredients. So, all is interesting. But probably not interesting enough to return to. All the same.... Prost ! (or however that comes out in Ukrainian.)

Umanpivo "Zhygulivske"
500 ml brown glass bottle, coded "090419" and sampled 08/13/19

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's with a little trepidation that I'm tasting this. A lot of the Baltic area beers I've had in the past have been less than stellar to put it nicely. But at least this is Ukranian, not Russian, so there's hope in that. It's poured a clear golden body beneath a short head of bright white foam. It's not quite fingerprints-through-the-glass clear, but it's close. The head retention seems to be pretty good as well. I don't see too many bubbles rising below, and the ones that I do see are quite tiny. In the nose it's basic, and clean, apart from an aroma that I usually get from Baltic beers although I have no idea what it is or where it comes from. That note is minimal though, and mainly what I'm finding is yeasty fruitiness and a mild malt note. I'm assuming there's some adjunct in use here, but it doesn't have that "adjunct beer" smell. Moving on to the flavor... it definitely tastes like an adjunct beer, not because it has that odd heavily sugared fermentation profile, but because it's lacking in grainy malt flavor. I didn't detect any hops in the aroma and there aren't too many here, although it does have some herbal and floral character. Given the malt flavor, the balance actually isn't bad. This is simply a lighter flavored lager that might be good for summer. It doesn't have the quality of most western European lagers, and certainly not the finesse of a Czech Pilsner or the hop punch of a German lager but it's alright as a mainstream pedestrian beer - kind of an American Adjunct brewed in the center of Ukraine. What I do wish it had was more carbonation. It's got some, it's not flat, and I know this is a regional preference, but for me it's a little low. I won't fault it for that though, as again, it is their preference. The body remains medium-bodied, and it's actually quite smooth which is at least a trade off for not having more zestiness. In the end I feel it's not that bad, and actually pretty good on the world stage when you think of these types of beers all grouped together. I'm not sure I'll buy this again, but it is kind of quirky, and it would make a nice beer at a summer pool party, especially given that at events like that I like to just forget about tasting beers and relax, so maybe I will get some.
