Collaboration with Modern Times Beer

A collaboration with Modern Times Beer, this Imperial Stout was made with cocoa nibs from Fruition Chocolate and freshly roasted Modern Times Coffee and gently aged in our oak foudre to draw out mellowing vanilla and toasted coconut notes.

30 March 2020 - Beer #62

Corona Day #18

Price: $5.99 at Clinton Gourmet Corp. in Manhattan

Appearance: 5 - super black with a mocha head. The remaining film isn't budging.

Nose: 4 - not a ton going on. Definitely a lot of roast and some coffee. As it warms the aroma is opening up. More roast than coffee.

Taste: 4 - like the nose. Pretty standard stout with a touch of coffee. Could drink it all day. Almost tastes like cinnamon way at the back end.

Mouth: 4 - sticky and coating, but not terribly thick. Could definitely drink it all day.

Overall: 4 - Crom. You. Lent!

Cheers!

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a finger high tan colored head that died down and eventually nearly completely faded away, leaving just a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of coffee and cocoa nibs are present in the nose; these become a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of coffee and cocoa along hints of oak and slight bits of toasted coconut.
M: It feels medium-bodied, smooth, and dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This stout delivers a strong dose of coffee and cocoa without any traces of alcohol, making it relatively easy to drink considering its strength.

L: 4 opaque black with a medium sized dark tan head
S: 4.25 chocolatey goodness
T: 4 Baker's chocolate, hops, some coffee, dark malts and fruits. Leans more sweet than bitter.
F: 3.75 a bit thin but still pleasant
O: 4. A great stout despite it being a style IA doesn't brew often. I hope it pops up again this winter.

pours deep black with a brown foam head. taste of burnt coffee and a bit of milk chocolate. The 8.3 abv is not well hidden, the alcohol taste is prominent. The aftertaste is somewhat bitter. The alcohol is what stands out to me here, a bit of a bitter burn at the end. Overall, a very enjoyable stout.

Canned on 8/15/2019. Poured into tulip glass at room temperature. It pours almost black with dark walnut hues, and a half finger of light mocha head that dissipated quickly. It smells of roasted malt, dark chocolate, burnt coffee, and char. The taste opens with malty sweetness and just a hint of milk chocolate and vanilla, but is quickly overwhelmed by burnt coffee grounds and char. It finishes dry and decidedly bitter. It has a medium mouth feel with a low level of carbonation, and the 8.3% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, Hungry Eyes is a very well-crafted, basic Stout, without the gimmicks that are so prevalent today. It impresses me as a bigger version of Modern Times' Black House, which I really like. It's a no-nonsense but tasty and thoroughly enjoyable Imperial Stout. It would pair well with a hearty meal but would also be great drinking around a fire pit.
