Oktoberfest Inspired Biere de Garde - Collaboration w/ Hop Butcher

Welcome to Gardesville is a question we asked with our Friends at Hop Butcher For the World. What if we brew a traditional Oktoberfest wort, with munich and vienna malts from Sugar Creek and German Spalter Select hops but then ferment it hot with our house saison yeast and cold condition it like a lager? A Wallonian Oktoberfest. The result has aromas of freshly baked bread, toffee and a decidedly continental hop character. It is full on the palette with flavors of caramel, biscuity malt, raspberry, pear, slightly herbaceous hops and a clean, dry, succinct finish.

An oktoberfest inspired biere de garde? Shut up and take my money! Cloudy amber body with an off-white head, mild lacing. Nose is light and pleasant with grains and slightly sour caramel malt starring, accenting flowers, orange, pear, and lemon. Taste has a sharp brett and hop second half that bring the complexion down a bit, otherwise it is as the nose foretold. Medium bodied with smooth malt, dry brett and cutting hops with a slight sour flair. Extra points for uniqueness

Pours a lightly cloudy orange-brown color. Thin, velvety white head forms on the beer and shows excellent retention.

Aroma has notes of malts, fresh baked bread, orange marmalade (spalter select hops!!).

Taste follows the nose with baked bread, slight grainy notes, some light bitterness and that orange marmalade coming in with the hops.

Feel is light to medium bodied, smooth, with moderate carbonation.

A delicious beer!

Delicious.
Bought from Beemiscuous, my largest source of Chicagoland micros because I only have to buy one copy.

I'm the first review on BA despite this being listed in three places: as an O-fest with collaborator Hop Butcher; as it also is here; and finally, as Is/Was' Brett Beer rendition.) I suppose a lot of this is because Is/Was breaks the mold. All of which is preface to explain why I must explain now why I said Welcome is "Delicious."

I could cop-out and say it is Delicious because it is. And to me in my elder years, I'd be satisfied. But you kids have to set a higher standard for ales. So, here is my review as a jump-start.

Welcome Looks that way... I want to drink this nice foam that has protein swirls until its end. (It is as active as I want to be.) Smells are just good, but I definitely am told that these pale malts are yearning to be fruit. The yeast's quality then becomes clear in the Taste: simple, integrated and consistent from beginning to finish. This is a very fresh biere d'garde; but it should not be stored... unless you want to deny yourself pleasure.

Is/Was is close to one-of-a-kind among 8,000 micros. I'd like to come visit them, but they have no taproom. So my only way of showing my appreciation is to be awed... and seek them out, despite my tendencies as a cheapskate.
