Dark brown appearance with modest moist head. Rich chocolate caramel roasty nose and palate. Mouthfeel is medium to full body, silky smooth, lightly carbonated.

A - Very dark brown pour with thin caramel lacing.

S - Lots of dark chooclate malt and smokey char, totally dominates the nose.

T - Chocolate roast, chocolate char, and some smokey character. Ends balanced with lingering chocolate cocoa char and light bitterness.

M - Borderline big medium to full bodied with some light frothiness around the edges.

O - This is a really enjoyable Imperial Porter and well worth seeking out.

beautiful dense creamy light brown head that lasted for quite some time; when it does disappear it leave a dense ring and some opaque island. Black as night.

A meaty smoke, with intense burnt toast notes; rich bitter smelling dark chocolate and/or burnt dark roast coffee. This beers nose is all about burnt and bitter but it is not overpowering.

The taste sort of pivots on the burnt because a richness comes out that you would not expect from the nose. This is like sucking on a piece of very dark chocolate in a very clean beer form. There is is a nice bite of piney like hops on the finish as well. The smoke is present in the smallest amounts once the palate adjusts.

This beer has a nice big and creamy feel to it; medium body, with a low soft and again creamy carbonation, intense roasty and hoppy bitter finish. A slow warming sensation builds, no heat per se but I can’t sense alcohol and it becomes more noticeable as it warms.

Ok I realize I used the work intense a lot this beer is all about it: but the richness keeps it in check. This beer is a bitter charry roasty rich and very drinkable beer with a little bit of booze feel to it.

Pours black with mahogany brown on the edges and a creamy, substantial tan head (little lacing). The nose has a little smoke and a LOT of cocoa and a bit of stone fruit and toffee. Very nice.

The nose is significantly more pronounced on the taste, and works exceptionally well with the still substantial cocoa and nice stone fruit flavor, with a bit of toffee lingering in the background.

A full, slightly creamy mouthfeel closes this delightful beer, from a “new to me” brewery that executed this not-so-often-seen style really well, IMHO.

On tap at Freak Folk Bier in Waterbury, VT.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.

The smokey aroma is not all that inviting to me, and I'm usually a pretty big fan of smoked beers. It veers ever so slightly into phenolic and rubbery territory. Band-aid is a dramatic descriptor, and it's not quite that, but it's closer to that than campfire.

The negative attributes above about the smoke are also in the taste. There's some nice chocolate and a little bit of roast here, but the smoke is just not done well, unfortunately.

This is creamy, but a little bit thin. It's not the most drinkable porter ever, due to the smoke.

I usually love smoked beers, and Freak Folk is usually pretty adept at brewing, but this was a miss.
