a rye based ipa and a good one. i dont like when these types of beers are too conservative with the rye, i dont want it as a novelty addition, i want to taste it and to feel it. so many skimp on the rye, or they pick it with sweet crystal malt to cut down the perceived spice intensity, and thats never been my thing. this is cool because it pairs quite a bit of rye with some equally intense hops, warrior and simcoe and loral, so they double down on the earthy and woodsy elements here, very successful, and somehow the beer is still mellow and drinkable, at least for me, a fan of the style. its wintery and appropriately named, tastes super fresh from the tap, and has a nice lingering bitterness to it. sure there is some sweeter malt in here too, but it doesnt come at the expense of the rye, just adds some body to this and a bit of a toasted breadiness, fully compatible. the hops are bitter but flavorful, the malt is full but interesting, and overall i thought this was real nice. impressive overall quality at this place, awesome taproom, highly recommended, one of my favorite on this side of town!
