my first from these guys, never even heard of this before, but its solid, true to style, authentically european in the right ways, and drinkable for a darker brew, nicely done, and good for the fall time. deep brown color here from the tap, proper inch plus of creamy frothy light tang head on it, lasting lace, good shine, looks right. the nose is pretty roasty, maybe a notch deeper than some others, but its not bitter or dominant, and there are layers above it of more common munich or vienna type malts, bread pudding and caramel without being super sweet, and a classic german lager yeast, seems clean on the ferment, simple in a good way. the flavor hints at coffee, light smoke, wet wood, and baked bread, warming and hearty while also staying kind of light. nuances of raisin, tobacco, and dark chocolate, and it holds up rather unexpectedly well to spicy food. the lagering seems patient and professional, the yeast strain fits the style, and there is a cleanness to this, almost crisp for a dark one, really well done. good carbonation, smooth feel, light bitterness to finish from the roast. good robust example of the style here, and a good first impression from these guys!
