Bought a 4 pack of cans to-go while I stopped in Annapolis for lunch. Black body with 1 finger head . Leaves a nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is mostly pine and can’t quite call out the other aroma notes. Taste leans more West Coast IPA than stout/Porter. Get a nice punch of hops from IPA with very subtle roast. For 8.6% it is a little thin in body. Overall I think this is a really nicely done black/cascadian IPA.

10 oz pour at the brewery. Pours a nearly opaque black (hint of red) with a creamy head. (The heads on Forward Brewing beers are almost always creamy.) Aroma and flavor feature pine, citrus, dark roasty malt (bitter chocolate/black coffee), and a hint of something that I can't quite place, but am not a fan of. Maybe soap? If so, it could be a glassware issue. Or maybe my tastebuds are playing tricks on me. Mouthfeel - hides the 8.6% abv very well, perhaps slightly thin. Overall it's a solid black IPA but would be much improved without the weird hint of...whatever it is.
Edit: Just noticed that there is rye in this beer. I suspect that is the source of the flavor I was trying (and failing, needless to say) to place. Hmm. That's a good explanation but still, I wasn't a fan of that note while drinking the beer, so I'm not going to change my ratings.
