Advised by the staff that this is a mango, jalapeno pale ale, so thought I'd give it a whirl.

Appearance: Poured from a growler with two fingers of head that produces marginal lacing and did not retain very well. The body is a cloudy dark yellow with orange highlights that shows steady carbonation.

Smell: Orange dominates the nose but it is closely followed by a touch of grapefruit and what I want to say is a mix of bread and exceptionally dry malt. I suspect that dryness is actually the pepper, as I don't usually encounter that kind of dry note here very often. Potency came out a bit with warming but it needs to be stronger.

Taste: Starts with some white bread barley malt with then gives off a subdued mango and citrus vibe that is quickly chased away by some citrus hops and a touch of a spicy dry note. Often I lament when a brewer makes a fruit or spiced beer whose gimmick completely drowns out the beer, but here I feel that giving that juice and spice a bigger presence would serve this one better. Still I enjoyed it, mainly because of that spicy dry note that seems unique.

Mouthfeel: The transitioning need work, as the beer is very quick to get to the end. Carbonation is well done but seems to fall flat near the end, which is where I wanted it the most. Slight pepper spice and mild malt aftertaste is nice and never gets out of control.

Drinkability: Settles down well, and manages to quench the thirst even despite that big dry note. On the lighter end of medium body. Not sure I'd want to drink it all night, but I can see if being a great compliment to seafood dishes.

Final Thoughts: A curious case indeed, as the pepper in this beer is a bit more subdued then I would like, and the mango is just far too brief. That said, a modest Pale ale makes up for their absenteeism here, putting forward a good product. Given that this beer doesn't seem to market itself as a Chile beer, but as a pale ale, I found it an interesting spin on the style. I'd be curious to see what a more Chile and Juice focused beer would be like from this brewery. Sadly, it's not very often I find myself Strathroy way, so that doesn't seem likely, but for the most part, I enjoyed this one.
