Rani is a blend of a young beer and a four month old farmhouse ale aged in an oak puncheon and refermented on foraged elderberries. The mature farmhouse ale provides a slight funk and depth that balances the younger bright beer. The result is a dry beer with a kiss of acidity, with notes of strawberries, blackberries and tannic structure.
Rani was the early bird reward for investors of Fair Isle's NextSeed campaign. Bottled in October 2019 and released in January 2020.

Pours a ruby red with big light pink head. Lots of visible bubbles rising in the glass. Aroma is firmly on the funky side and not fruity. None of the barnyard aromas and nothing that I think would turn anyone away but not exactly inviting either.
The taste is very dry and dominated by yeast and bacteria flavors for me. The fruit is barely there but I wouldn't be able to identify the fruit. It's a good saison that happens to have a bit of fruit in it but nothing really stands out.
I like this beer but in some ways it's a bit too inoffensive. When Fair Isle opened the taproom they had a lot of different saisons on the menu and achieved a great variety of flavors. What makes this beer unique is the elderberries but I don't feel the fruit is doing enough in this beer.
