Pours a clear, brown colour, not unlike a root beer or lighter cola. Fizzy, three finger head appears and disappears within a minute, leaving behind a soapy ring and cap.
Strong malty aromas on the nose, primarily sweet, caramel, lightly toasty. Bready with a smattering of hops here and there.
Taste follows the nose fairly strongly here. Not much to remark on. Pleasant maltiness, a little bit of a one note here, but that’s still okay. A lightly metallic, mostly grassy hop bitterness and in the background.
Light body, but towards the heavier side of light, with less than average carbonation, bubbles lightly graze the tongue, overall giving this a slick, smooth body.
I am a huge fan of Dunkels. As far as they go, this is a fairly unremarkable take on it. In terms of average lagers in general, Newark isn’t bad, better than most macros. It’s just fairly one dimensional. No bad, or unsavoury notes here, just a fairly light dunkel with mostly malty notes. The malt notes lack complexity, but are perfectly serviceable.

can: pours a clear light cola color with a 1 finger cap that reduces quickly...aroma is lager like with a nice roasty undertone....malt sweetness and some burnt treacle undertones.....flavor is clean malty-toasty...clean attenuated finish where the hops show up to add nice bittering...a decent light dunkel in the Thuringer style

Short-lived head and that settles to a film, some early lacing. Malty aroma and taste, but not overly sweet. A middle of the road brew with not a lot of muscle, tending to the soft or watery side. Slightly chemical finish. Forgetable. May strike folks as being more akin to an ale.

473 mL can from the LCBO; coded L1919 (presumably Nov 19 2019) and served barely chilled.
Pours dark but translucent, with a muddy copper brown-coloured body capped off with one finger of smooth, foamy, pale beige-tinged head. Within two minutes' time, it has dissipated entirely, leaving a relatively barren surface behind - no lace or cap in sight, only a sickly thin collar. Fairly sweet on the nose, with lots of caramelized, bready malts, as well as hints of cocoa and toasted grains. Pretty straightforward.
The nose told me most of the story - this is a malt-forward lager for sure, and it's on the sweeter side IMO. It tastes of toasted grains and bready malts throughout, with plenty of caramelized sugars mixed in there too; maybe a touch of grassy hops towards the tail end, but the saccharine dark malt flavours are what linger on into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation levels that gently brush against the tongue; feels smooth and a little slick on the palate. Good drinkability - I finished my glass quickly enough, but I wasn't clamouring for another afterwards.
Final Grade: 3.33, a B-. Newark Lager is fine for what it is, and I suppose I could just leave it at that - but it's worth adding that I'm not predisposed to enjoying Dunkel lagers, and they may in fact be my least favourite German beer style. The main takeaway is that this is a half-decent attempt at one, making it worth my half-hearted endorsement at the very least. I'll return to it again at some point.
