32oz grunt purchased at Pacific Avenue Pizza, along with a 12" pizza and another 32oz grunt of a local IPA, all together for the price of $20. This is a collaboration beer with Radio Brewing of Kellogg, Idaho.
Poured into a shaker pint glass, it was very dark brown, virtually black. There was a large creamy and noisy head, somewhere between tan and mocha in color. Said head dropped quite quickly, leaving streaky and spotty lace.
The nose is of dark, roasty smoked malts. In addition to the smokiness there is also a coffee like aroma.
The flavor is quite similar to most Porters. There is a dry, roasty, coffee-like flavor. The smoked malts are fairly low in the mix. Although the smokiness does increase as the beer warms, they accentuate the other flavors of the beer rather than overwhelm them. The finish is dry.
Medium bodied, with a dry and slightly prickly mouthfeel.
A nice porter that happens to have been brewed with smoked malts, rather than a smoke bomb, like many smoked porters I've had. Although I've had a couple massively smoked porters that were balanced (more or less) by being big, imperial-level porters, this is a nice example of a more subtle version of the style. It's nice after dinner on a cool, spring evening. Would drink it again.
