an impressive take on a type of brown ale i wish we saw more of, very well executed, and from a technical standpoint this has to rank among their best beers in here. its nice and dark, encroaching on black but in the deeper realms of brown still, a decent off white head on it, and really looks the part. it smells like sturdy roasted barley, some familiar bready english ale yeast allowed to develop a bit, and very minimal hops, just faint bittering, classic to me though and though, robust but appealing. i like how much flavor is in here without it being hoppy and with the alcohol being so low, definitely a session brown at this strength, but its packed with dark chocolate, espresso, dark bread, and even molasses notes, although its only sweet for a flash in the middle. this is solid, layered, cohesive, traditional, and professional, all i want in the style and nothing i dont, would have ripped though a number of these if i had more time in here. i hope they keep this one going, its an often neglected style and they got this right. yum.
