Ahtanum Fresh Hop

not sure i have seen this hop in a wet hop context before, awesome. these guys have done a ton of fresh hop beers this year, just amazing, it was great to get to drink so many of them when i was in last week. this one is a little more malty than a lot of their others, a little more amber in color, a little more toasted and earthy, more autumnal too, almost drinks like a pale ale rather than a straight up ipa, but the hop profile works well with the additional grain. this has some grassy almost noble spiciness to it, a higher alpha northwestern woodsy vibe, grapefruit in the columbus vein, pine in the simcoe vein, and an almost peppery complexion in this one, not quite radical but pretty great, and this beer showcases it well. some breadiness to the grain, not much sweetness, and it can take more bitterness than is here, so this is sort of at once hearty and mellow. the freshness is obvious, the fermentation is very tidy, and the texture is nice, round medium body with a slow fade and high carbonation. neat to see this hop both in a single hop and also a wet hop context, not as common now as i think it used to be, but clearly still capable of greatness. not as striking as some of their others, but very steady and classic. i can taste how much fun these guys had with harvest time this year in this beer!
