Pours an immense, viscous midnight-black body capped with just over a finger of rich, dark walnut-hued foam; modest head retention leaves a few paper-thin islands of cap, a large, creamy collar, and a steady, layered spread of soapy, webby lacing around the walls of the glass.
Aroma wafts black cherry and accents of burnt chocolate chip cookie into ample char, with hints of baked black bread finding faded coffee grounds phasing to airy oak over time.
Taste offers a poignant malt char into creamy dark chocolate upfront, with tinges of licorice and smoke settling to black cherry esters over the mid-palate as notes of black bread crust and oaky vanilla warmth layer the finish.
Mouthfeel brings a medium body and a subdued, lower-end carbonation, leaving creamy overtones coating an effortlessly slick texture over the mid-palate as wispy char linger to a delicate, almost crisp back end and steadily warming finish.
A uniform display of expressive char and bittersweetness; the pointed roast and distant suggestions of deeper, licorice and smoke-laden subtext prove a poignant nod to older style tradition, this one with a soft, barrel edge.

Appearance: Onyx-toned black matte body with a smallish albeit lasting, dark tanned layer of foam.
Smell: Dark deep maltiness with sugar-sweetened bold coffee, a giving drizzle of chocolate sauce and a splash of dark rum and bourbon amidst hints of spiced, port-soaked dates, black cherries.
Taste: Dark maltiness with all-too velvety smooth tastes of dark chocolate ganache, robust heavily-roasted coffee, and luscious dark caramel glaze. A flicker of dark fruitiness. Descent steadily gains alcoholic warmth as the vanilla-tinged barrel accents arrive and saunter around the palate. Peppery, spicy alcohol and woodsy tannins show as it warms a smidge for the smooth, bourbony finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Relatively easy-going carbonation. Pleasant glossy mouthfeel.
Overall: That's a mighty decent Descent there, HC. It's certainly high up there on the ABV without being boozy, it never strays to being grotesquely sweet and they didn't trash it up with additives. It's a solid, well-built beer with barrel character, which is a mighty tall order these days, considering breweries are churning out half-baked, ham-fisted base beers crammed with garage.
