16oz can from Hops & Bottles. Muddy pinkish amber pour, silky, spotty beige head. Soft raspberry aroma. Taste is raspberry, lactose, with some underlying bready malts. Smooth, mildly fruity, quenching.

 

 

a milkshake ipa with blackberry and raspberry, vanilla bean, and lactose, the kind of thing i have general disdain for, by find myself drinking somewhat regularly anyway, a guilty pleasure of sorts maybe, and this is a pretty good one, as they go. its not too sweet from the lactose which is nice, it retains some tartness from the fruit, which appears natural in here, and gives this a nice bright pink color from the can. i get more of the vanilla in the aroma than the flavor, which i am fine with, i dont want a beer like this getting too desserty, and this one really doesnt. the hops could be ramped up a bit though, maybe it smells dry hoppy with some citrus character, but there arent a ton of hops for me in the flavor, they definitely seem behind the fruit and maybe only equal to the malt. maybe a milkshake pale more than ipa, although a little bitterness does leak into the finish which helps this not be too sugary. i think the flavor is excellent though, and believe there is a lot of room left in these styles for messing around with proportions of things and timings and such, and this follows a little different trajectory, which is appealing to me. the fruit is real which i like, the desserty parts are well restrained, and even though i only want one in a sitting, i liked this pretty well...
