Medium carbonation with about the same body
Aroma is grain, malty yeasty bread, sour dough ,wheat
Taste is slightly sweet and even slighter sour bitterness. Grain, yeasty malty bread.
Had this with food and it worked great. Wasn't such a big beer that it should be shipped alone but had more than enough character to be interesting

Pours a semi-cloudy but see-through golden color. Three finger sudsy white head collapses quickly leaving just a thin layer of foam on top of the beer.

Aroma is noticeable immediately as it carries some pungency to it. Initially its sweet with grainy notes, but as the beer warms its takes on more of a fresh bread aroma. Bit of DMS does come through the nose, but that is not out of line for the style.

The taste is grainy, with some light fresh baked white bread notes. These flavors are initially there and decent, but they disappear far too quickly off the palate giving the flavor profile a real weakness to it. Some sweetness present on the palate along with a light grassy hoppy finish. Again, some DMS is noted here. I did not notice any skunkiness or metallic notes at all.

Feel suffers here since the fleeting flavors on the palate convey a certain weakness or wateriness to the mind. The robust rich bready malts of the truly excellent helles lagers out there are missing here. Bright spritzy carbonation. Semi-dry finish.

Overall this was a solid helles lager. I'd drink it again without second thought, but it would benefit from a more robust and lasting flavor profile.

My first from my Brewers' Advent Calendar (I'm starting three days late), Kauzle gives me reason to look forward to the other 23.

Prior to this year, I had a low exposure to Helles and after tasting Kauzle, I'm not sure why.
A very sweet and gently hopped lager that is as refreshing as a beer needs to be under most circumstances outside of extreme heat and humidity.

To style, I find Kauzle has good Looks; near golden, a big fluffy head settles to normal. Smells are mostly malt, bread and cracker-like. Tastes are well balanced as noted above with a gentle drying sensation from the hops. Bubbly in the mouth, Kauzle still has sufficient softness to say "yum."

While enjoying this Helles, I snacked on some Lavosh (a sweet cracker) in the shape of a Christmas tree. I'm hoping this fine metaphor can remedy the intolerance and ignorance that is trying to rule the world.

BA has three times as many ratings for this Kauzen beer than its others. Its website gives the impression of being a traditional small town brewer going back almost two centuries. But I don't get much more info because of a first-time event: the first website whose only translation buttons are in German and Chinese... and no English. I'm curious about that distribution contract to China.

Regardless, I'm glad that Kalea GmbH has such clever marketing and selected Kauzle for this year's Brewers' Advent Calendar. Will this get me closer to Heaven ?

Poured from 500 cL can into shaker pint glass. Exp 05/2021 stamped on the bottom of the can.
A: Pours a very clear light yellow hue with high carbonation producing a 2-3 inch frothy white head with excellent retention. Eventually settles to a thin skim with decent lacing.
S: Mild banana and clove with dry cracker malt. Hints of honey and pepper.
T: Sweet light caramel malt with subtle banana, honey, and clove.
M: Very light body. Lightly sweet fruit and malt notes.
D: Extremely sessionable. Nice example of style.

Thanks to Brad and Dee for the Advent Calendar!

Clear golden copper, small off white head

Flavors are light and subtle; black pepper, grassy hops, and some toastiness. Carbonation is light and good.

A good beer.

Look: It pours gold and clear with a white head. Head retention is good.

Smell: The aroma is malty sweet with a bit of apple in it.

Taste: It has a grainy sweet flavor with low bitterness. There is a low, spicy note with it. It does finish fairly sweet as well.

Overall, nice easy drinking malt oriented beer with sweetness all the way through.

A: Pours a clear medium golden yellow in color with slightly heavier than moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and faint bright yellow + brassy colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense sudsy foamy bright white head that reduces to a medium to large sized patch of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of slightly mottled very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of bready + grainy + pale malts with a light to moderate amount of grainy sweetness. Light aromas of spicy + earthy hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of bready + grainy + pale malts with a light to moderate amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of spicy + earthy hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which lingers slightly before fading away.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Drinks pretty easily with well hidden alcohol. Enjoyable and fairly true to style, just not memorable.

16oz can poured into 10oz tulip. Poured a lightly cloudy pale yellow color with 1/2 inch of white head that had moderate retention and good lacing. The aroma had light grain, some fruitiness, and a touch of skunk. Same on the tongue, with an added touch of blandness. The body was just on the full side of medium for the style, and had a semi-sweet finish. Drinkability was OK. Overall, a pretty bland and boring attempt on the style. Why they have an expiration date of 5/2021 on this beer is beyond me.

500mL can, EXP 05/2021. Clear golden body with a foamy white head. Aroma is doughy pale malt and spicy/grassy/floral hops. For flavors, more of that doughy pale malt, nutty Munich malt, spicy, earthy, and grassy Noble hops; faint Granny Smith apple and lager yeast. Medium body, nice and smooth, well balanced with a dry finish. I love this beer Advent calendar already! Great start - an easy drinking and well put-together Helles!

500mL can from the Costco box stamped EXP 05/2021 (18 months from now!) poured into a Kauzen Brau mug at just above fridge temp 5.2% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright light amber in color with short lived off white head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring a few bubbles. The aroma is floral and malty with hints of green apple and pear. The taste is pale malt up front with a grassy, fruity mild bitterness on the finish. There is a hint of tartness that I could do without. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied, adequately carbonated and dry in the finish. Overall, ok, even enjoyable beer but a rather pour example of a Helles. Rated to style, the numerical score is lower than the experience.

First can in the Costco/Kalea 2019 Brewer's Advent calendar.
Decanted from a 16.9 oz (500 ml) can into a custom taster pint; exp 05/2021.
A: Pours an ever so slightly hazy (I do not think it is chill haze), golden color with a nearly one finger, short lived, white head, rim retention, and broad and soapy lacing.
S: Aromas of caramel, barley grain, and dark bread rind.
T: More semisweet than semidry. Flavors solidly follow the nose. Relatively light, peppery bitterness.
M: Light bodied with light carbonation.
O: A delicious and flavorful Helles Lager, perfect for the first day of December (or earlier).

Poured from can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a nice golden amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a moderate level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a good sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heavy of a grainy and bready smell that is mixed with a little bit of caramel. Along with these smells is a little bit of herb and grass, as well as a touch of light fruit smells.
Taste – The taste is heavy of a bready and wheat flavor that has some notes of herb and earth and a decent showing of some caramel and light fruit. As the taste moves on, the bready and the light caramel tastes of fruit fade a bit all while some earth and herb come to the tongue. At the end a little bit of dank herbal and pine come to the tongue and leave one with a nice clean, malty, but moderately hopped taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is moderate in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is average in terms of thickness and creaminess. Overall the feel is pretty good for the mix of sweet, malt, and light hop and it makes for a pretty decently easy drinker.
Overall – A rather nice Helles overall. Fun and easy drinker!!

I am definitely going numb to the canned German mostly traditional brews from the Beer Advent Calendar. They have a "from the can" taste that is hard to shake, but there are some great traditional styled German beers in here. I need to go to Germany (I am German speaking first generation US).

This one pours a deep yellow - dirty. Just enough fizz. The aroma is of finishing hops. Not bad. The taste is authentic, with just a bit more of a malty character than usual. I wish some of these really were boozy (or over hopped).

Recommended. You could do worse for an example of the style. Good choice from the collection.

From the Costco 2018 Advent Calendar, it pours a nice clear golden color with a nice head that diminishes soon, too soon, to nothing. Bready malt in the nose. Bready malt in the mouth. Pleasant, sessionable, but not exciting.

2019 Update: Seemed better this year!
