A: Pours opaque and murky chestnut. Persistent frothy tan head. Looks like a barleywine.
S: Sweeter notes of caramel and raisin. The description says it’s hopped with Amarillo and Simcoe. Hops are subtle on the nose.
T: The aromatics come through on the palate. Sweeter notes of caramel and raisin. This is not a sticky sweet barleywine. The hops come through more in the flavor than the aroma. The beer never gets bitter but it tries to go there. Subtle notes of candied orange and some citrus rind. Fairly dry and nutty on the finish. A comfortable hint of warmth, the first time 8.8% ABV shows.
M: Light to medium body where I prefer more medium to full for the style. But not enough to detract from the beer. Slight warmth. Dry and more bitterness on the finish as I sip for longer.
O: Overall this is a solid barleywine. They call it a Transatlantic Barleywine. I assume this means elements of American Barleywine (American hops) and English Barleywine (sweeter, sticker malt notes ). This is not as American hop focused as Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. I think they did a really nice job of combining elements of this style from both sides of the pond, without one overpowering the other. Personally, I prefer a little more oomph in BiL with some more hop presence and a little more of the sticky sweetness, but overall this is enjoyable. In addition, it’s not a style you see produced much locally so I’m all about it.
