Birrificio Sul Mare “Granchio Nero”
33 cl brown glass bottle, “Da consumarsi preferibilimente entro: 03/2021 Lotto: 00718” and sampled on 6 Decembre 2019
Notes: “INGREDIENTI: acqua, malto d’orzo, vinacce da uve di Vermentino nero prodotto all’origine da Cantine Basile, luppolo, lievito”.
Look: Hazy golden body with a touch of pink to it beneath a short head of white foam. Average head retention and lacing.
Smell: Vinous, funky, acidic, and sweet.
Taste: Again, vinous, funky, acidic and sweet. It appears that some Brettanomyces was carried over on the grapes giving it that funkiness and a bit of acidity, but it’s more of a soft tartness than full on sour. The grape flavor is clear, and the combination of sweet and sour is really interesting. It’s only mildly bitter at 12 IBUs but with the additional acidity it finishes dry with some mineral character (crushed granite) lingering.
Feel: In the mouth it’s gently effervescent with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. There is a sediment at the base of the bottle but I think that’s just from lack of filtration, and not a secondary fermentation.
Overall: This one hits it out of the park. It would be great if it had better head retention but quite a few sour beers suffer on that point. The mouthfeel remains bright and zesty, and the aroma and flavor are both fantastic. Well worth seeking out for fans of fruity sour beers.
