a unique belgian strong ale here, called an abbey ale on their menu, not sure exactly where this fits, as its somewhat more malty than a classic tripel, but totally yeast driven, a bit sweet, and unfortunately just a little bit one dimensional and a tad phenolic, just a bit too warm on the fermentation maybe, but a beer with plenty of promise. its cool to see a new operation open up with a focus on belgian and english styles, but the beer wasnt quite all the way dialed in yet for me. this is quite sweet, with that candy sugar thing going on in the middle. a neat ester to the yeast of green pear and green grape, some light white pepper spiciness in here too, but i think i want to taste the grain a little more, the beer is too sweet overall, even for the style, and the yeast kind of runs away with this. that said, the alcohol is well hidden, its got decent carbonation, and a unique herbal character through most of it, i think with a little fine tuning this could be quite good. i look forward to checking them out when they have had a little more time to refine things, for now, this will scratch a rough itch for a belgian yeast profile but is not one i could drink more than one of.
