Our newest Lagered offering "Open the Portal" is a 4.9% ABV Pilsner that started with a base of 100% Rverbend Malt Pilsner, and a punishing amount of German Tettnang in the boil and whirlpool. Fermented cold and clean with our preferred House Lager yeast, spunded for 100% natural carbonation, and then laid down to rest in our Horizontal Lager tanks for over 2 months for maximum crispness.

We loved this base beer, but we love coffee even more, and we love @cooperativecoffeeroasters EVEN MORE THAN THAT! We’ve known Matt for years, and we’ve been on the hunt for the perfect opportunity to pair his coffee with our beer. We did an intensive cupping session catered around our personal preferences, and settled on a naturally processed Ethiopian bean, Benti Nenka, that Matt just absolutely knocked out of the park.

We blended in a house-processed cold brew concentrate until we achieved the perfect balance, and we couldn’t be more jazzed about it. Notes of classic dry-cracker Pilsner malt character, chocolate-covered clementine wedges, herbal tea tannins, scones dipped in fruity-tooty berry jam, and just a hint of that classic coffee roast we all know and love. As with all our Lagers, this is crisp AF, refreshing, and ultra balanced. We LOVE this, and cannot WAIT for the next Coffee Pils in a few months.

Spoiler: this base coldbrew may or may not also end up in cans… It really was THAT good...Dibble dabbling in some cold brew products.

Poured from the can into a Libbey style pilsner glass.

Deep lemon body color, unfiltered and slightly hazed appearance but with some clarity and nice reams of linear fine carbonation. Fluffy and very rocky topped head, big bubbled and easily three fingers in height. Surprising amount of retention for a pils, with some scattered wet lacing. Really nice semi unfiltered look and appearance.

Neat aroma. Added coffee angle is there, but its more of a subtle roast note, with a touch of acidic berry like fruit. Chewy sensing malt with a little bit of depth, and good and clean aroma so far.

Palate goes in some unexpected directions. Mid palate has a bit of a milky flavor, touching a little bit of herbal grassy hop and lemon like notes. Coffee notes come out only slightly on the finish and are very fleeting, but also seem to take out much of the bready and herbal base flavors while drinking. Light touches of acidic fruity berry, and a good dryness.

This is a solid pilsner, but the added coffee seems fleeting and not contrasting that well with the base beer. More of a clash than a compliment, not to say that coffee in lighter beer styles is a bad thing cause I have had some decent ones. At least a decent pils remains.

A: Pours a pale medium yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate pale golden yellow + pale yellow colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense sudsy foamy bright white head that slowly reduces to a handful of small patches of thin film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of cracker + bready malts with a very light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by light aromas of lager yeast + very light aromas of smooth cold brew coffee. Very light aromas of grassy + citrus/orange rind hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of cracker + bready + grainy malts with a very light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of lager yeast and light flavors of smooth rich cold brew coffee. Finally there are light flavors of grassy + citrus/orange rind hops. There is a light amount of roasty bitterness and a slightly heavier amount of hoppy bitterness which lingers for a moderate amount of time and fades away leaving a clean finish.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with a clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a really crisp + clean + refreshing mouthfeel. Enjoyable with a more subtle presence of cold brew coffee than I expected but that made it more drinkable.
