Tasted from a 16 oz can poured into a Deschutes Rastal glass.
L - The beer is pitch black and does not allow any light through, even when held up to the light. The head pours thick and fluffy with a tan color, but fades away fairly quickly.
S - Aroma is dominated by two things: burnt grain and strong coffee. It is distinctive, but a bit one-dimensional. No other malt, hops or fermentation aromas break through.
T - Strong, bitter coffee flavors along with some lower chocolate and even lower grassy hops. Very clean finish means the flavors faded quickly and did not give a lot of depth of flavor. It is missing (or the coffee has drowned out) the more subtle caramel, nutty and bready flavors that an English Porter is known for.
F - Medium to thin body. Carbonation is mild, as befits an English version. Stronger bitterness than I expect for the style, but it is possible some of it is from coffee and the hops bittering level is not unusually high. No real alcohol presence, which is as appropriate for the moderate ABV.
O - This is an enjoyable beer with strong coffee character. I feel the coffee is too much for what is normally a restrained yet complex style, turning it into an almost harsh one-trick pony. This could be great for hard-core coffee lovers, but I'm more of an English beer lover, so this is not my favorite.
