Mexican Chocolate Stout

Pours a dark chestnut brown, a little more transparent than typical for a stout, with beige foam that quiets quickly, but doesn't completely disappear. Smell is sweet, cinnamon, chocolate, hint of coconut, with little grain. Taste is more balanced, bringing roasted grain character to match the sweet taste. However, the chocolate and cinnamon are weaker in the taste. Feel is very smooth, somewhat light for a milk stout. Overall, a very good beer, but would be better if the strengths of the smell and taste were present in both.

12oz bottle purchased from the fridge as part of a mix-a-six pack for $11.99. I'm not sure when this was bottled and I think that I purchased it some time ago.

Look: It's fairly dark but not black (it actually has more like dark brown hues to it). The head is khaki-colored, frothy, and actually sticking around. It was a finger and half tall upon pouring. Now that the beer has settled, it's a quarter of a finger tall. Looks very nice.

Smell: Nice aromas of sweet cinnamon, chocolate, and spice. It really does smell like Mexican hot chocolate. More of the spicy cinnamon aromas come out after swirling. Nice cocoa powder aromas.

Taste: Mmmm, it's very crushable and smooth. The body is fairly nice also - not bad for a 6% stout. It's not thick but I wouldn't call it thin either. The cocoa and cinnamon flavors give the beer a very nice taste. The slightly spicy cinnamon is a good foil to the sweeter stout and chocolate notes. There's a nice touch of acidity on the finish. The finish also has nice roasted malt notes, only slightly bitter. I'm actually glad that this beer does not taste so sweet to me; I'm actually not sure if Sweet / Milk Stout is the right style for it. I also was not able to find any indication that the beer has lactose or milk in it.

Feel: Nice mouthfeel. It's not thick but also not thin, especially for a 6% stout. I would say that it's medium bodied. Soft carbonation, creamy mouthfeel.

Overall: It's really tasty. Very smooth and drinkable. I don't see Mexican chocolate stouts often, so it's good to try them when I do. I still need to get my hands on Westbrook Brewing Co.'s Mexican Cake. Stone Xocoveza is another good one that I haven't had in a while.

This beer pours out very dark brown with zero head, it also had a floaty on top. Smells of sweet chocolate. Taste is of sweet sugar, missing the heat and chocolate.

 

 

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours dark brown, not quite opaque, with a medium tan head. Aroma and flavor feature earthy chocolate, cinnamon (too much, IMO), and dark roasted malts. Mouthfeel is a tad thin. Overall it's pretty tasty but not a standout.

Black color with some ruby highlights and a modest dense tan head that recedes to just a skin but continues to produce some nice lacing. The aroma is dark choclate, cinnamon and sweet caramel malt. The taste is also sweet malt, dark choclate, caramel, cinnamon and a hint of cream.very much like Mexican hot chocolate. The body is medium, moderate carbonation, smooth and creamy, very easy to drink. Altogether, this is another nice brew from Schlafly, very tasty and satisfying.

I really wanted to go higher with this one. But the lack of any noticeable heat just disappoints me. If it’s a Mexican chocolate stout, it needs jalapeño. That’s just elementary.
That said, it’s a very good beer. I’m not going to do a full review because Mexican chocolate stout (minus any pepper heat) says it all. Rich chocolate malt, cinnamon smoothness and a bit of cafe con leche on the tongue, with more chocolate on the nose. More on the sweet side than the dry coffee stout side. Just really miss that heat!

A- pours black in color with a one-finger foamy khaki head that reduces to a film floating on top

S- smells of dried chili peppers, green pepper-heavy coffee and chocolate. Undertones of cream and a hint of cinnamon. Chili pepper dominates

T- opens with cocoa and roast, followed by slightly smoky chili peppers and cinnamon. Light milk sugar sweetness adds a hint of vanilla, more chilis and cinnamon on the finish

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and continues into the finish, just a hint of pepper heat on the backend

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's interesting that the label gives you an ABV (6.0%) and IBUs (30) but nothing about the ingredients. I'll assume it's got chocolate in it, and cinnamon, and maybe even hot peppers but who knows? It could even be a flavoring. It has the typical brown-black body with a short but densely creamy tan head. The aroma clearly suggests chocolate but there's more to it as well. To me it seems like lightly roasted coffee beans. On to the taste... the chocolate remains, and it seems to have cinnamon as well. That mainly shows up towards the swallow, with the chocolate upfront, and some really nice nuttiness and caramel coming forward across the middle. I'm not finding any heat so this is obviously a straightforward take on Mexican hot chocolate. It's richly flavored but not really that full, and sweetish, but balanced. I'm going to go with medium-light for the body which explains a lot about how they got that balance, and why its carbonation is moderate. It's soft and smooth. The head initially held up well and it's left some nice lacing throughout the glass. I love that it's richly flavored but not so much so that you couldn't drink a few of these if you wanted to. Nicely done.

Appearance:
Root beer brown under an air-poofed head that bares the milky color of an iced latte. Mid-range duration with short, yet impressively unbroken, lace.

Bouquet:
An abundance of unsweetened cocoa powder, blended with cold chocolate milk, then lanced with streaks of mild cinnamon.

Feel:
Full bodied, smooth, and low carbonation—everything you could want from a frosty stout. Ends on a clipped note of cinnamon dryness.

Taste:
Creamy milk chocolates, exposed to a light flurry of powdered cinnamon; despite being docile, both flavors stay on until the next sip takes the stage. As it airs, a miniscule lick of jalapeño flickers like a dying ember in the aftertaste.

Overall:
Both aroma and palate are balanced but a lack the desired bravado but I believe that was their intent.
