weird they are calling this one a porter, it looks not even as dark as a common brown ale, almost more copper than anything, certainly shades too light to be a porter by most definitions of the style, although that really doesnt bother me much. i do think the beer lacks a little grain depth for all the flavor in here, vanilla bean, dates, and molasses are added to it, and you can in fact taste those things distinctly in here. it seems super sweet because there isnt a balancing element. if they are trying to make this taste like the dessert, well they nailed it, but to make this a drinkable beverage i think it needs some malt balance from dark barley, this would be far better in my opinion as a traditional porter that had some of that. roast and a coffee note would go a long way. for now, its sweet as a dessert, but the date and vanilla flavors together are authentic and delicious, and the lighter body does allow them to stand out unmolested. better than a gimmick, but still a small pour is plenty. cool execution though!
