Malted barley, English hops, and yeast create the magic before this beer slumbers for several months in Scotch whisky barrels. Oaky, malty and balanced, this golden-colored ale brings boldness without being too assertive.

Pours a hazy gold color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of sweet malt, strong smoked malt, slight pale malt, hint of wood, and a hint of yeast. Fits the style of a Scottish Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, strong smoked malt, slight pale malt, hint of wood, and a hint of yeast. Overall, overpowering smoked malt, malt profile dominate, weak appearance, but good feel.

Frankly, this may or may not be a good beer. I rated it very poorly because it was way too peaty/smokey for my tastes. I typically love Boulevard smokestack series, but this just did not work for me. If you buy it, just be aware that this has a lot of smoke/peat flavor.

ADDITION 11/09/2018: it now has a year of age.
It is an incredibly beautiful pour, with a nice white head that is about as frothy as you could get. Increasing to 4.5
Aroma is strong, as of what I believe is called 'peat.' I really like it as it is so unusual. Increasing aroma to 4.5
Amazing mouthfeel, very creamy. Increasing to 4.5
Great flavor, very unique. Leaving at 4.25
This is a very unusual, and amazing, beer. Increasing Overall to 4.25.

ADDITION 12/22/2017: I had this in a side-by-side with a few other Scotch ales, and this one was much different in all categories (but mouthfeel) than the others. As other reviewers have stated (on this site, and on others) there is a distinctive smokey, peaty aroma and taste to this beer. I am not a Scotch drinker, yet I found the differences fascinating, and overall I liked them. It was very different than Backwoods Bastard, yet I liked both beers for different reasons.
Increasing aroma, decreasing appearance.

Nice golden color, with a nice frothy off-white head.
Not a lot that I was getting in the aroma (perhaps too subtle for me), but the flavors and the mouthfeel were pretty amazing.
I'm not a Scotch person, but I drank it with a few who were, and they said the flavors (peaty) were reminiscent of Scotch. It was unlike anything I have tasted before. I would like to taste it in a side-by-side with Founders Backwoods Bastard.
