An imperial pint from the bourbon trail, Schlafly Barrel-aged Barleywine assembles the heft of a British stout and the unmistakable flavor of a Kentucky bourbon. That’s because the beer finishes its aging process in a used, white oak Kentucky bourbon barrel. The result is an over ten percent elixir with oak, vanilla and whiskey backed by the considerable malt strength of a barleywine. Keep a stiff upper lip

12oz bottle poured into a snifter
A- pours a deep ruby color with a one-finger head that reduces to leave nothing behind
S- caramel chews and toffee on the nose, followed by tobacco, chocolate & leather. There's a big spicy oak note, as well as plenty of barrel juice
T- plenty of barrel up front, big hit of whiskey & oak, followed by a mix of dark fruits and caramel. Mid-palate has a big boozy note, as well as more whiskey. The finish is hot and boozy, with more bourbon on the linger
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a big, boozy finish that burns the throat
O- the barrel overpowers the base beer, leaving this one to take more like a bourbon cocktail

Bought a 4-pack, a totally good experience! Was smooth, not too hoppy, not to sweet, just right for the style. Color was deep amber, aroma was mild but pleasant maltyness. Mouth feel was satisfying, but not too chewy. Hope I can get more!

was gonna let this one sit for a bit but couldn't resist, month old bottle. pours a nice deep amber color, can almost see through it. a tan head fuzzed up and left some chunky lacing behind. nose is quite nice, lots toffee and caramel, dark fruits, some booze and vanilla balancing out. flavor is a similar matter, a bit sweet and the flavor of the booze is there without the heat. bits of oak come through as it warms. tasty stuff. numbs the face a bit and leaves the mouth warm with a lingering caramel note. hope i can find another somewhere

11.2oz bottle; drank it the day it hit the shelves. Had it in a side-by-side with a two year-old Boulevard BBQ.
Look: Pours a medium amber, very clear, with a beige head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring around the glass.
Aroma: dark fruits, bourbon, candied sugar? and perhaps a bit of oak; as it warms, I find I really like it.
Feel: medium bodied, and perhaps slick or buttery. Nice
Taste: Flavor follows the nose, with strong, warming alcohol; very nice.
Overall: Although the appearance and mouthfeel are perhaps a bit better in the BBQ, the taste and aroma of the Schlafly BBA Barleywine are clearly better. Hopefully the strong alcohol flavor with mellow with age. If I had to choose based on this tasting, I'd take the Schlafly BBA Barleywine over the Boulevard BBQ.
