This dark, malty German lager pays tribute to the two brave men who strolled across the moon 50 years ago. The dark brown lager is balanced in both malty sweetness and hops.

A: The beer is dark brown in color; when held up to a bright light it is slightly hazy brownish red in color. It poured with a collar of off white bubbles around the edge of the glass and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of sweet and dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste is a bit sweet and has lot of flavors of dark malts along with hints of fruits.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems to be both malty and fruity but is very easy to drink.

Aroma is fruit, malts and a small hint of medicinal/cough syrup. The flavor is malts, caramel/mild toffee, a hint of dark fruit/raisins and a sweet/smooth finish.

From the bottle, it pours a lovely coppery amber with a nice head that soon reduces to a robust ring. In the nose, caramel malt. In the mouth, it is light caramel malt over malt.

Pours dark brown with a murky transparency. Head is two fingers of khaki foam that retains well. Aroma is roasty, nutty, earthy, caramely malts, which are the backbone and focus of this beer. Little notes of caramel and toffee mingle with hearty bread and herbal and spicy hops. Flavor profile is toasty, nutty, earthy malts with spicy hops. There is a very distinct lactic sour and cherry quality that ruins it. Mouth feel is fuzzy and medium-thin. Overall, promising aroma, but it falls apart dramatically in the flavor profile.

12 oz bottle. Pours light brown with tall, long-lasting, foamy, off-white head. Aroma is of bready malt and noble hops. Body is medium and smooth. Taste of Noble hops, salt, caramel malt and some sourness. Finish is long and earthy. Something wrong with this brew.

From a twelve ounce bottle, this brew is a deep amber brown color with a soft off white head. The aroma is a bit malty with some soft hop notes. Medium body. Clean finish. This is a drinkable and well made dark lager.

Brown to amber hued with a fingernail of beige around the rim and covering half of the middle. The aroma is of caramel, dark wheat, and a suggestion of grassy hops. I’m tasting a gentle dose of caramel, bready malt, with a very light grassy hop note at the back of the palate. The mouth is light and smooth.

Pours an auburn color - clear and at least initially surprisingly effervescent. Thinnish off-white colored head dissipates but not completely leaving a thin layer of cream colored foam on top of the beer.
Aroma has some light nutty, earthy notes. A hint of toasted bread peeps through with some slightly spicy hops coming through on the nose.
Taste has light notes of an earthy nuttiness, some light caramel notes and a spicy herbal hop finish. Its really lacking a pronounced malt backbone though and that is a huge hole on the flavor profile.
Feel is light and smooth. Bright carbonation with a smooth drier finish.
Overall its an easy drinking beer, but it lacks the malty backbone that should be present in this style.

Another from the Lunar Lager mixed pack and a style not often attempted in the U.S. And also a favorite style of mine -- so I have the highest of hopes.
Poured into my tall Becher, no real dating on these bottles.
L -- Clear, deep copper chestnut color with a cream colored head that settles to a persistent cap.
S -- Earthy malts with a light cocoa overtone. Some mellow, herbal hops peeking through.
T -- Sweetish, near to caramel flavor with the same earthiness from the nose and the mellow herbal hops in balance. No big toasted bread character I expect in a good Munich Dunkel.
F -- Soft and lightly creamy mouthfeel with a medium to lightly-robust body.
O -- Just a little lackluster in the malt flavor. The light caramel and cocoa are okay to style, but there should be more complex breadiness, pumpernickel bread crust character. On the plus side, Schlafly didn't load this up with roasted malt/barley as most brewers seem to do with a Dunkel. However, there is a Schwarzbier in the mixed pack, so I'm sure the roasted malt was saved for that recipe.

On tap. Poured out a clear, brown color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled roasty with a touch of coffee. Sweet toffee, caramel and a roasted finish.
