This year's batch was much better, sampled again in july of 2007. Pints of these bad boys. The malty Begium is now there, and the flavors really shine. I'm bumping all catagories around .5 1 for taste.

Overall, was disappointed in the Dubbel. Pour was good, a clear mahogany brown with ½ inch tan head. Unfortunately, could not detect any distinguishable aromas before the taste. A very *balanced* beer, but came across with nothing really outstanding in the flavors. Somewhat plain, thin to medium body. Could drink quite a few of this, but why bother with the other great offerings from Schlafly waiting in the wings.

½ Gallon Growler. Amber in hue, transparent around the edges, touchy carbonation, a head that comes and go, decent lacing. Spicy malts and some alcohol present on the nose. Slick and sweet, flashes of Belgium spices and a touch peppery; medium bodied. Tastes of licorise, thin bodied, decent malt based backbone with a nearly too sweet finish. Decent enough.

Deep amber colored, very clear with a nice sized tan colored head that showed good retention. Spicy aroma. Layers of coriander, white pepper, a bit of orange, dates, and dark caramel. The flavor has a punch of spice early, followed by the caramel and dates. There is a lot more spice on the finish. Maybe just a touch too much of the coriander. Nice carbonation and a wonderful mouth feel. Great drinkability. I think this has a lot of alcohol, but it is well disguised.

Had the Dubbel at the Tap Room. Was listed at a lower ABV (6.1%) than the BA page shows. Medium reddish-brown color, with a two finger tan head. Smells were a little muted, but got the usual dark fruit, yeast notes. Very balanced flavors, malty, caramel, touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel was slight sticky, but finished clean. With a fairly low ABV for the style, this beer was easy to drink. Not the best Dubbel, but a solid offering from Schlafly.

I found this 2005 vintage Belgium Dubble a popular item at the Jan Winterfest @ St. Louis City Museum. Appears red amber with creamy head with a spicy and fruity nose. Very nice taste - some bananna but absolute lacking licorice or anise that was reported in reviews in 2003. Good carbination. Not cloying. I am limited in my experience with this style but really liked it along with many others judging from the comments and reactions of those I shared tasting this beer.

Deep, crystal clear mahogany red. Head is initially substantial and fine, but dissipates quickly and completely. Nose is quite rummy/winey with a strong licorice component. Body is OK, but thin for the style. Licorice is there again on the palate along with some chalky minerality, but there is really not much going on. A disappointing effort.

An oddly disconcerting brew from Schlafly. The beer starts witha decent appearance being a red amber with an acceptable creamy head and some lacing. The aroma is also OK being somewhat spicy and complex. Yet the flavor comes on with a very strong licorice taste that is dominating and lasting. This spoils the nice full body and creamy nature of the feel. Not one of this brewery's best, yet not a throwaway either. Warming once you're past the odd flavor.

A: Arrived with a 1/2" of tan head, decent retention. Medium brown.

S: Some candy/sweet malt, spices. Not much there.

T: Dark fruits, plum, some tart apple. Slight hop bite on the back.

M: Very clean, almost unexpectedly clean and refreshing.

D: 9% ABV is TOO well hidden. Dubbels for me are sippers, this one was a quaffer.

on tap at the brewery. deep red color like blood. very little head. tart, dark fruit hints. amazingly well balanced dubbel. no harshness and almost like a real trappist brew (Rochefort was probably what it came closest to). a real prize and im surprized this hasn't been rated higher in the past. maybe they've changed their recipe.

i can't remember if i had this before but i havent reviewed it so here we go.

looks pretty nice, has a nice color to it looks familiar to a whiskey almost

smell is a bit weak compared to other dubbels but it is still a pleasant mixture of yeast and mild hops

taste is nice and smooth, not overpowering even with the slighty higher alcohol content

drinkability is very good

Light reddish-brown in color, has a small off white head that quickly disappears, sweet malty caramel and fruity flavors. Medium-full body with a slick and syrupy mouthfeel, sweet finish, something is missing for this to be a Trappist clone, this is very average nothing outstanding.
