Crowler filled on 12/11/20; consumed on 12/28/20
Pours a crystal-clear, deep honey-gold body capped with multiple fingers of dense, fluffy, eggshell-white foam; good head retention leaves a finger of pillowy cap, a wide, creamy collar, and soapy rings of lacing layered down the walls of the glass.
Aroma starts off with a wispy minerality showing underlying honey peeking through, soon followed by a prominent green apple note persistent through the mid-palate; a tinge of lager yeast and bread dough brings further stability to the bouquet, while lightly spiced wheat toast and a touch of rummy sweetness highlighting earthy, candied molasses against softer, grassy hops shows character past the close.
Taste opens with green apple peel and spritzy minerality upfront, tightened by light hay and bread dough with wildflower honey undertones through the mid-palate; a hint of darker bread crusts and distant tone of molasses richness develops into the back end as white bread crusts and grassy hops linger past the finish.
Mouthfeel offers a light-medium body alongside a rounded, taut, fluffy carbonation; delicately oily textures focus the mid-palate before a resurging, drying spritz proceeds into the back end, remaining ever-crisp though taking along some vaguely watery textures on the plate through the finish.
A style largely lost to time in the Kottbusser is revived, and unsurprisingly BarrieHaus' interpretation establishes itself subtly, with the honey and molasses additions present and graceful additions to a curious approach slightly imbalanced by its eccentricities, and thus unable leave a sense of a fully-formed impression.
