We’ve been really enjoying Black Lagers recently, and decided to revisit the style. With a whole new malt bill for Tidal Wave, we’re getting notes of coffee, fig, cocoa, and just a hint of caramel. This lager is ready for all your winter activities.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Jan 9 2024 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a dark black-brown cola colour; holding it to the light reveals its clarity, as well as some crimson red highlights. It's crowned with two glorious fingers of creamy, foamy beige-coloured head that dissipates over the next five minutes; afterwards, a big fat collar of creamy suds surrounds a sudsy cap. Tons of beautiful lacing, too - this might be one of the best-looking black lagers I've ever seen. The aroma is also enticing, including hints of toffee, dark chocolate, roasted grains, toast, plum and just a touch of coffee.

Very flavourful, especially for something that could be considered a 'light' beer at 4.5%. I'm getting roasted grain and cocoa right off the bat, as well as hints of dark chocolate, toasted bread and dark fruits - namely, plum and fig. Bitter coffee grounds/roastiness surge forward on the back end, with lingering hints of cocoa and dark fruits fading into a roasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Light-ish in body, with lively carbonation & tiny bubbles that softly prickle the tongue with each sip, giving it a pleasing, active mouthfeel that suits this style nicely. Great drinkability; there's no reason a black lager fan couldn't down a couple of these in a row.

Final Grade: 4.06, an A-. Tidal Wave is the second lager I've reviewed from Beerlab!, and if one thing has been made clear it's that they're pretty darn good making 'em. This is a well-rounded black lager - the bitterness/roastiness might be a little overstated for some folks, but as a coffee addict I'm certainly not about to complain. Highly recommended, and something I'd be interested in picking up again the next time I'm in London. Great job, Beerlab!
