473 mL can from the brewpub; no canning date. Served barely chilled.

Pours an opaque chestnut brown colour, producing half a finger of loose, frothy, dark tan-coloured head that sizzles off in less than sixty seconds' time. A barren surface remains; no cap or collar, though there is some scuzz clinging to the glass. Illuminating the glass reveals plenty of floaties - ok, maybe Nutella isn't exactly a boon for the visuals, but it does pay off on the nose. Hazelnut and chocolate dominate, but I'm also getting aromas of coffee, marshmallow and graham cracker - vaguely reminiscent of s'mores, but the Nutella vibe is far stronger.

If nothing else, this is an interesting stout - flavouful and distinct from any other I've had in recent memory. I'm tasting hazelnut spread, milk chocolate and graham cracker on the front end, with marshmallow and sweetened coffee bringing up the rear. A little bit of roasted malt character, but it's mostly just the bonus ingredients. Finishes sweet, with hazelnut, dark chocolate and light coffee bitterness persisting into the aftertaste; slightly warming, but overall the 10% is well-integrated. Full-bodied, with relatively low carbonation; froths up a little on the tongue, lending some fluffiness to its thick, smooth mouthfeel.

Final Grade: 3.77, eking out a B+. Creativity and bright ideas contributed enormously to craft beer's original surge in popularity, but pastry stouts like Bright Ideas are simply not my jam. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking anyone for brewing (or appreciating) these modern takes on the style. I just don't really get the appeal: the stout characteristics are inevitably marginalized by the pastry ingredients. So sure, this *does* taste like Nutella mixed with cold brew coffee, making it a success in that respect... but I can tell you right now that I got bored of this very quickly, and feel no need to drink it again. Sorry, this is turning into an 'old man yells at cloud' rant, but back in my day the imperial stouts tasted like stouts, not like dessert. And get off my lawn.
