Been on a bit of a German beer kick recently, and this was one bottle in the arsenal. After taking a gander at the Marzen list, it is a bit too bad so many mediocre Am. offerings head up the list.

Color on this fella is a deep golden almost bordering on light copper. Some decent head retention that fades into a thin lace of tight foam around the edge. Lacing is pretty standard for style, meaning hardly any.

The nose is predominantly bright grain aromas with a lingering dried fruit character in the background: mainly raisin but also picking up on some fig.

Flavors are clean and a bit off style. A very welcoming barley field on a dewy morning followed by some lemongrass. Grains here are not too heavy-handed, which is pretty nice unless you are a stickler for this style.

Feel is crisp, clean, and bright. Dry enough on the finish to leave you reaching for another sip.

Overall, I am a big fan of this one. Definitely a bit of a different take on the style but not offensively. Although a Marzen, this would make for some solid summer drinking.

Appearance - This is a pissy light yellow in color with a small white head.

Smell - The grain is nice and right-on for the style but there's a sweetness here that ruins the nose.

Taste - The grain isn't bad but the overt sweetness threw off the taste. It's like the juice from canned cream corn. It's kind of sweet and kind of milky.

Mouthfeel - This is light-bodied with some nice carbonation.

Drinkability - It was just good enough to stay out of my sink but I definitely wouldn't recommend or buy again.

Update - Well I said back in 2006 that I wouldn't buy this beer again but did and boy am I glad. The offending sweetness that I found four years ago was absent and the grain here is very lovely. The overall flavor is classic festbier style and I really enjoyed the beer this time around.

Radek's bottle from NYC. Orange wheat aroma. Creamy above average mouthfeel, great head on medium pear colour. Carbonation right there.Significant wheat. Decent drinkability. Not like the style, other than the caramel but a decent beer for the abv. Worth a try.

Nice caramel aroma and balanced taste. Some nice honey sweetness. Doesn’t really taste like a typical Märzen but that’s not a bad think because this one is definitely better.

A: The beer poured clear golden yellow in color with a two-finger white head, which quickly faded to a thin layer of bubbles consistently covering the surface. A moderate amount of carbonation is visible from the rising bubbles.
S: There are aromas of bready and toasted malts in the nose, which is relatively sweet; smells of caramel stand out in particular.
T: Like the nose, the overall taste is dominated by caramel flavors and has a moderate amount of sweetness.
M: It feels light-bodied and rather smooth on the palate.
D: The beer was easy to drink but nothing really interesting stood out about this beer that would make me want to have another one.

500 ml from "Lifesource" S.salem. $4.79 Golden clear beer with a lovelly thick bubbly yet creamy off white head. Good malt driven aroma.mainlly caramel/fudge. The caramel/fudge aspect carries on into the taste yet its balanced by grassy hop making this very balanced indeed. I like. The extreme balance( is that even possible?) gives this a creamy smooth mouthfeel that just rolls over the tongue. I really liked this one very tasty

This is a nicer beer than the Gold. A real German Marzen with nutty malty sweetness.

A: Nice cloudy golden color, and a thin white head. Some lacing.

S: Very grainy, some fruit raisin maybe... also the breaded grainy smell, and malts.

T: Its very good, very clean and sweet up front, then the grainy grassy taste, very nice Marzen.

M: Very light and very smooth, I really enjoy it.

O: This is a very nice Marzen, I'm glad I grabbed it.

Mediocre Oktoberfest. Overly sweet with a corny aftertaste. The aroma is mildly vinous with some good barley but otherwise it's mostly just sugary sweet without a lot going on. The beer pours a relatively pale gold with a fluffy white head. The flavor is simple, sweet and boring. I might go even further than boring and call it mediocre. It's just too sweet. An alright beer, but sub-par for the style.

The abv is listed as 6.2%.

I actually had this a couple times in late 2009 and this is form my notes as I have some catching up to do (I always rely mostly on handwritten notes and then transfer hither).

Somewhat deep gold with a big, faintly off-white head steadily shrinking to a thin creamy top, a little weak lace.

Aroma is strong, full if somewhat simple helles-type aroma with stronger raisiny-sweet alcohol. It has a lot of somewhat yeasty bread, some barley, herbs, apple. It's quite nice and reasonably full-bodied.

Taste is as above mostly, starting clean, fruity and herbal, then with sweetish zesty bread, grain, apple, hints of herbs, grass and lemon. It has a rather zesty finish with light bitterness to balance the otherwise sweet-leaning character. It's a pretty nice, simple and slightly sweetish but otherwise firmly flavoured, enjoyable version of the light/helles-style of marzen.
