473 mL can from the brewery; dated Jun 5 2020 and served barely chilled.
Pours black as a moonless night, topped with nearly an inch of puffy, foamy, beige-coloured head that falls apart within two minutes' time. It leaves behind a thin, filmy cap as well as a wide, soapy collar of froth; a modest-sized ring of wavering lace has also been generated. Not especially aromatic, and a little 'worty', but I do like what I'm sensing - notes of roasted grains, sponge toffee, molasses and cocoa, with hints of candy corn and nuttiness.
It tastes of bready malts, roasted grains and lightly caramelized sugars, with hints of cocoa powder, toasted biscuits and nuttiness towards the finish. Relatively dry aftertaste - nice balance between bitter and sweet, though it leans toward the former in the end. Light-ish in body, with low carbonation levels and a smooth, satisfying feel on the tongue. I would have no trouble throwing back a few of these.
Final Grade: 3.54, a passable B grade. Imperial City's Irish Stout is serviceable, but I don't think I can say that it's a particularly good example of its style. This one vaguely reminded me of a brown ale homebrew that I did with a friend several years ago - it's palatable and good enough to get the job done, but not anything more than that. Give it a try if you're interested in dark ales.
